THE ROCK

Psalm 18:31

For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?

Matthew 7:24-27

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Have you ever stopped to think about how many times in the Bible that God is compared with or referred to as a rock? He’s the Rock of our Salvation, the Rock of Israel, the Rock in whom we take refuge, our Rock and Fortress, just to choose a few.

Let us be clear, we are not talking about some small stone that you toss in a stream or attempt to skip on a lake. No, what we are talking about is a magnificent, immovable rock. Picture the mountains of the Rockies. That is the splendor of our unchanging God. God is a firm foundation on which to build our life. He can withstand any storm, bear any weight, guard from any enemy. He is a Mighty Fortress, a bulwark never failing as Martin Luther put it in his well-known hymn.

So, we end, our week of devotions being reminded that when everything around us feels like shifting, sinking sand, God is the Solid Rock beneath our feet.

What a Comfort!!
