Opening Prayer

Lord, as we open Your Word, quiet our hearts and focus our minds. 

Let Your Spirit illuminate what we read 

so that Your truth becomes clear and alive within us. Amen.

Psalm 63
A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.


1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.


2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.




6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.




Reflection

Psalm 63 is the prayer of someone who has discovered that God is not just important—but that God is essential. It is the voice of a heart that knows where true life is found.

“O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You.” (v.1)

It is of value to note that David is in the wilderness when he prays this is not a place of comfort, abundance. Yet his first instinct is not to seek escape, but to seek God.

He doesn’t say, “I seek Your help.” He says, “I seek You.”

This is the heart of worship: wanting the Giver Himself more than the gifts He gives.

“My soul thirsts… my flesh faints… as in a dry and weary land.” (v.1)

I suppose we could say that David’s physical surroundings mirror his inner condition. He is spiritually thirsty, longing for the presence that satisfies. And he knows nothing else will do.

So, Psalm 63 reminds us: only God can satisfy the soul’s deepest thirst.

“Because Your steadfast love is better than life…” (v.3)

I believe this line represents the turning point. David’s praise doesn’t rise from ideal circumstances—it rises from a revelation:

God’s love is better than life itself.

Better than comfort. Better than success. Better than certainty. Better than anything we could lose or gain.

Once we understand this, worship feels like it just comes naturally—like it’s something we can’t help but do.

“My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.” (v.8)

This is the beautiful paradox of faith: We cling to God… and yet it is God who holds us.

Our grip may weaken. Our attention may wander. Our strength may fade.

But God's hand never lets go.

That's our "Good News" reminder today. Thanks be to God.

Prayer

God, You are my God. I seek You today—not Your gifts, but Your presence. Quench my thirst with Your steadfast love. Hold me when I am weak, and teach my soul to cling to You with trust and joy. Amen.
