THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

JULY 9, 2024

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances".

I wonder if you at times in your walk with Jesus have ever struggled or even neglected the practice of prayer. If you have, reflect on those moments, “what were the reasons that you could not seem to give the practice of prayer priority?”

Perhaps your prayer seemed too time-consuming, maybe even confusing or dull. I remember one person telling me their struggle was they didn’t know what to say. I have found in my own journey, and in listening to testimony of others, that it is normal to feel this struggle at times. Prayer is a wonderful gift and practice that has been given to us to assist us in our communication with our creator. Yes, there is a mysterious aspect to prayer, that we do not fully comprehend. However as we practice prayer our understanding grows, and it becomes less of a mystery. We understand that prayer is relational, the aspects of speaking and listening, are as integral to our relationship with God as they are to human relationships. Prayer is  life-giving, stimulating, and transformative.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 encourages us to "rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances". This can be challenging, especially when we don’t feel inclined to pray. Here are three simple types of prayer that might help you reconnect:

Thanksgiving Prayer: Focus on gratitude. Even in difficult times, finding small things to be thankful for can shift your perspective and open your heart to prayer.

Intercessory Prayer: Pray for others. Sometimes, praying for the needs of friends, family, or even strangers can reignite your passion for prayer and help you feel more connected to God.

Contemplative Prayer: Spend time in silent reflection. This type of prayer involves quietly sitting in God’s presence, listening, and being open to His guidance.

Remember, prayer is a personal journey, and it’s okay to explore different ways to connect with God.

Begin today, and select one of these types of prayer and incorporate it into your quiet time with God this week.
